• For metal sheds, we recommend a rust-inhibiting oil-based primer followed by at least one coat of 100 percent latex paint. Oil-based primers are a good match for metal surfaces because they prevent water from reaching (and rusting) the metal.
• For wood siding, the same type of paint that was previously used will work best, especially for adhering to the siding surface.
• If you’re painting your wood shed for the first time, start with a cleaning agent to remove any nail bleed or mill glaze, followed by an alkyd primer once dry. A high-quality acrylic paint is then applied, which will bond well with your shed’s siding (for smooth wood siding).
